The Art of Making an Authentic Greek Coffee

What you'll need to make an authentic Greek Coffee:

First, you'll need some special equipment. You'll need:

  • A briki, which is a small metal pot with a long handle that is specifically designed for making Greek coffee.

  • Finely ground coffee beans

  • Water

  • Sugar (optional).

What to do:

  • To get started, fill the briki with cold water. For each cup of coffee, you'll need to add one heaping teaspoon of coffee grounds. If you like your coffee sweet, you can add sugar to taste.

  • Stir the mixture until the coffee and sugar are dissolved.

  • Next, place the briki on the stove over low heat. As the coffee heats up, you'll notice a froth forming on the surface. This is called the kaimaki, and it's a signature characteristic of Greek coffee. As the coffee continues to heat up, the kaimaki will rise to the top of the pot.

  • Once the kaimaki has formed, remove the briki from the heat and let it sit for a few seconds to allow the coffee grounds to settle to the bottom of the pot.

  • Then, pour the coffee into a cup, being careful not to disturb the sediment at the bottom.

  • Greek coffee is typically served hot and with a glass of cold water on the side to cleanse the palate between sips.

  • Enjoy!
