How Greeks Drink Ouzo

To savour ouzo like a Greek, pour it over ice, dilute with water, watch it cloud, and enjoy slowly with a mezze (appetizers) to complement its anise flavour. We at Mazee Gifts & Classes have put together a short video to show you how to do this, in no time!

How to Pick the Best Ouzo

When selecting the finest Greek ouzo, consider its origin—Lesvos and Chios are renowned. Look for clear bottles to ensure purity and inspect labels for ABV (alcohol by volume) around 40-45%. Premium ouzos use organic ingredients and traditional distillation methods, often noted on the label. Opt for brands like Ouzo 12 or Metaxa for quality assurance. Personally, we love Ouzo of Plomari for its smoothness and authenticity. Sampling small batches from local producers enhances authenticity. Enjoy nuances of anise and herbs by sipping slowly with water and ice.

Ouzo Best Pairings

Ouzo is best enjoyed with salty, savoury, and spicy mezze . On the islands, Greeks drink their Ouzo with seafood, while on the mainland, Ouzo is enjoyed with loukaniko (Greek sausages), homemade pickles and local cheese. The classic way is to serve it with bread, olives, cheese, tomatoes and cucumber.
